The Tabla is a pair of drums with stretched membrane heads, closed vibrating chambers, and a barrel-shaped body. The musician's right hand is used to play the smaller drum, known as the Dayan. The larger drum, the bayan, is played with the left hand. For centuries, Hindustani classical music extensively used the Tabla, which is still the most common classical rhythm instrument today.
